Playground

This song is about being in the music industry as a Christian group. I have personally talked to Scott about the meaning of this song. Anything that is in quotes inside parenthesis is what Scott said in reference to its meaning.

"All I know, all I have is what’s been given to me"
("The only things I can understand and comprehend are the things that I can see")
"What I know is real is all I can dream"
("I never have fantasy dreams. My dreams are always about something that I already am familiar with". In other words, his dreams are always realistic)
"And I feel my heart is changing"
"The one and only thing I know is we’re going nowhere"
(As a Christian band it is pretty much common knowledge that you won’t be as successful as most secular bands. Sometimes, Christian artists struggle and try much harder than a secular band but usually with little success.)
"500,000!"
("That’s a slam on some people we used to know back home before we had a record deal, it’s kinda an inside-joke." Here, the 500,000 is referring to record sales. Scott was a "new" Christian when Plankeye was formed and I’m guessing that Scott is saying that back home many of his friends, who probably weren’t Christians because he himself had just become one, had teased the band saying that they would never even sell 500,000 copies as a Christian band)
"Be it sometimes I might, yeah I put up a fight"
(It is human nature to strive for success and we have to fight off that urge for fame. Plankeye may have times where they have thought of going secular, because they know that that seems to be the road to success)
"Gotta get this off my chest tonight"
(So they don’t hide it, they pray admitting their desires and God reassures them that as long as they follow Him they will always be happier)
"All my thoughts are rearranging"
(With God’s reassurance, they no longer strive for secular fame)
"But what I really want to know is are we going nowhere, 500,000"
(The number of copies of Commonwealth has sold is debatable. The T&N site says that it has sold over 700,000. Now if that’s true, then I would say that Plankeye’s intention in this line is to be asking a question back to their ‘friends’ back home, kinda like rubbing it in their face saying ‘you still think we’re going nowhere? We sold over 500,000!’ This is of course assuming that they have in fact sold 700,000. If they haven’t, I would still say that the line’s intent is to be directed at their ‘friends’ cuz Plankeye is getting played on secular stations now so they are obviously going somewhere, and 500,000 sold is in the near future. Two possibilities, both with the same meaning)
"All eyes peer, looking from the outside"
"You don’t understand what you see me"
(Secular bands watch and wonder why a band with such talent would want to ruin their chances at fame by singing about God)
"I come running out on your Playground"
(They enter into the secular scene as Christian artists, remember, their songs are getting air time on secular stations now)
"Sometimes things aren’t the way they’re meant to be"
(A Christian band is supposed to pretty much flop but Plankeye continues to gain popularity, not following the normal trend of a Christian band)
"You stare at me and all these things are coming down"
"I’m not sure and you’re giving me the run around"
"Could it be that you don’t know me?"
"It’s all in the way that you shun me"
